South Africa Summer Program

SPU's South Africa Summer Program includes literature, theatre, and service opportunities. SPU students travel to locales such as the southern point of the African continent to hike the rugged beach, they visit the museums of Cape Town, they stay at the University of Stellenbosch, they go on safari in the Addo Elephant Park, and they end at the Theatre Festival in the small, colonial-looking town of Grahamstown.

While in those many locations, students read stories and see plays written by such writers as Xhosa, Zulu, Muslim, Afrikaans, and British South African writers. Studying the history of apartheid, they learn about the policies of economic racism and its legacy in contemporary South Africa.
