Faculty

Kimberly W. Segall, associate professor of English, is the faculty director of the South Africa Summer Program, which began in 2003. Dr. Segall received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University, specializing in South African cultural studies. Awarded a research fellowship, she lived in Cape Town, South Africa from 1999–2000, and directed a testimonial theatre production called “Khumbulani / Remembrance,” working with 14 Xhosa participants, who were former political prisoners under apartheid.

Dr. Segall’s research on South African literature has been published in several different venues and in a book of essays titled Lamentations. She teaches African literature and postcolonial studies courses at SPU. To date, she has led this study program four times.

“At the final campfire, after we have been on safari, watching for lions,” says Dr. Segall, “I love hearing the students talk about what they have learned, how they have been changed, and how their views of themselves have been enriched by learning about South Africa’s histories and stories.”
