Art Students
Students enrolled in the art portion of the program will choose two of the following four courses:
ART 2602: Western Tradition I: Ancient and Medieval Art (5 credits)
Survey course treating Western art (and its major Eastern influences) from ancient Egypt through the late Middle Ages.
ART 2603: Western Tradition II: Art since the Renaissance (5 credits)
Survey course treating Western art from the Renaissance until the middle 20th century.
ART 4950: Urban Spaces of Rome (5 credits)
A longstanding sacred and administrative center, the city of Rome has been shaped and reshaped by successive rulers to reflect social values, answer economic demands, and shape the lives of the people. In this course we will explore the neighborhoods of Rome, discuss the ideological, aesthetic and functional uses of public space and learn to identify Rome's manifold archaeological strata, from the earliest subterranean remnants to the uppermost layers of the modern city.
Upper-Division, Writing "W" Course
Art 4950: Roman Church Architecture (5 credits)
As the administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church, the city of Rome boasts a wealth of ecclesiastical architecture, including world famous buildings like St. Peter's basilica in Vatican City. In this course we'll learn to identify the major styles of Roman church architecture, acquire understanding of church decorative programs and their political meanings and discover the life history of Roman Church buildings, from the simple basilicas of the Early Christian era to the Baroque fantasias of Rome's second Golden Age.
Upper-Division, Writing "W" Course
Literature and Creative Writing Students
Students enrolled in the literature and creative writing portion of the program will earn 10 credits toward their English major or minor in Creative Writing and/or Literature. All students will register for:
ENG 4953: Writing Workshop: Special Topics (5 credits)
Offers an intensive writing experience in a small workshop setting. Genres, themes, and locations vary. May be repeated for credit up to 10 credits. Students must complete written assignments for ENG 4953 in their chosen genre, in keeping with major or minor requirements.
ENG 4954: Special Topics: The Eternal City in Art and Literature (5 credits)
Offers advanced study of the special topics in literature while participating in a study abroad program. Genres, themes, and locations vary.
