Tell me about your decision between a career in the medical field or education?
Growing up, I discovered two of my great passions: science and people. Looking towards the future, I always thought that the perfect career for a ‘social scientist’ would be the medical field. I pursued medicine and followed the motions to become a doctor by working in nursing homes, dental offices, and private care. It has been fulfilling and enjoyable, but I was mistaken in thinking that it was the only career path for me.

For the last 10 years, I have been involved with a leadership camp held every summer for high school students. I became a Senior Counselor at this camp a few years ago, working together with educators from across the state. My duties include instructing a small group of students for one week at a time. It was working at this camp and with these people that helped me discover my true passion for education.

Why Seattle Pacific University?
I initially decided to attend SPU as an undergrad because I wanted to go to a private Christian college in Washington state. I valued my education there and appreciated the staff and their dedication to both the students and their respective fields. My wife and I met at SPU and she got her teaching certificate there. It is a combination of personal experience and a testament from my wife that has led me back to SPU for a Master's degree.

How did you learn about the Robert Noyce Scholarship Program?
I first learned about the program as I was attending my interview for the MAT program at SPU.

Getting rewarded for pursuing something I love just seemed too good to be true. After finding out about all of the other opportunities that the program provides, I knew that it was something I wanted to be a part of.

What has been your greatest challenge this past year?
My greatest challenge this year has probably been the purchase of our first home. The stress of finding the perfect place, figuring out finances, closing the deal…it was all very stressful. Then there has been remodeling, yard work, and countless other little projects. It has been fun and rewarding, but definitely a challenge.

What are you most excited to be offering to your students?
I am excited to offer my students an education in life in addition to that of the sciences.

I have a strong passion for leadership, and look forward to incorporating some of these lessons into my classroom. I believe that as educators, we have the unique opportunity to be people of great influence in the lives of others. In a world where many kids grow up without positive adult role models, I hope to be a constant, loving example.

Any experiences are you currently looking forward to in this coming year?
I am looking forward to learning about the theory and practice of education.
I’ve become proficient in my knowledge of the sciences, and now desire to know more about how to effectively teach them.
