  • What Is It?

Desktop File Sharing
Many network-savvy operating systems such as Windows, Macintosh, and Linux, provide a means by which folders on a local desktop may be shared to the network. Due to the security risks inherent in desktop file sharing, this is not a solution for faculty and staff members using university-owned computers. If you need to share files on the network, see the Departmental File Sharing tab, or consult your CIS Micro Systems Team representative.

  • How To

Share Desktop Files
Desktop file sharing is a common method of file exchange within the residential network (ResNet). Persons who share files in this way should understand the inherent security risks and only share files as permitted by copyright agreement. Sharing copyrighted files illegally is a violation of law and university policy, and will not be tolerated and is subject to disciplinary action. For additional details concerning the university's position on copyright file sharing, see the Policies and Guidelines section of these help pages.

Report a violator: If you know of someone sharing files illegally on the campus network, please report them here.
