The Last Lecture
Series, sponsored by
Ivy Honorary, began in the 2007-08 academic year as a chance
for chosen faculty members to discuss their lasting thoughts
with the SPU community as if it were their final lecture. In
this quarter's lecture, Dr. Downing will discuss some of the
reasons for optimism and pessimism in our current economic
situation.
Douglas Downing,
Ph.D., is the author of 14 books
on quantitative methods and computers, including a trilogy of
math textbooks in the form of adventures stories:
Algebra the Easy Way, Trigonometry the
Easy Way, and Calculus the Easy Way
(first published in 1982). Recently he
has written
Java Programming the Easy Way.
His current economic work involves updating previous work on
unemployment and investigating other public policy questions.

Business Planning I (Autumn - 5 credits) and BUS 4632
Business Planning II (Winter - 2 credits).
This two-course series is taught by Dr. Herb Kierulff, who holds
an endowed professorship here in Entrepreneurship. You
study with a nationally recognized authority and champion of
Entrepreneurship when you study under him. One students
went so far as to say, “It has been
my best class ever.”

MAT 2700 Statistics for
Business and Economics has three rather than
four sections this coming year. SBE students
needing statistics should always check on the
availability of the approved alternate course, MAT
1360 Introduction to Statistics, of which
there are four sections scheduled in 2009-10.

Update on the
Social Venture Plan Competition
Last month's 3rd Annual Social Venture Plan Competition was a
huge success. And "huge" is the proper term. It was
nearly twice the size of the two earlier events. The teams,
judges, and student votes were all way up and the event expanded out
of Weter Memorial Hall onto Martin Square.
Check
out the winning teams and give a thought to where
you will be next April!
Get
a Mentor this Spring
The Mentor Program offers you a customized match with a business
leader, executive, or professional in a career field of your
interest for mentoring, job shadowing, or broad career
exploration.
Mark Oppenlander, Associate Director of our
Center for Applied Learning says, "If any students were hoping
to begin meeting with a mentor this spring or early summer, now
is the time to sign up." Enrollment
in this popular program was limited last quarter, but is open
once more for non-graduating students. Students from all
majors are allowed to sign up. Find the Mentor

Banner.
